Astanga Vinyasa Yoga is a
powerful, dynamic system of practice developed in Mysore, south India, by Sri K.
Pattabhi Jois - affectionately called Guruji by his students. The system begins
with sequences of postures (asanas) linked with breath and movement (vinyasa).
There are six sequences. The
first is known as the Primary Series, then Second, Third and so on. Each
sequence starts with sun salutations, then flows through standing
and seated postures, finishing with restorative poses and
relaxation. At the heart of this practice is a smooth breath,
combined with internal locks (bandhas) and steady gazing (drishti). Consistent repetition of the correct sequence can
purify and strengthen the body while calming and focusing the mind, as thousands
of Astanga students worldwide will attest. Enjoy!
